“I would rather have known you for a moment than never at all. I would rather endure this inexplicable pain of outliving you than to have never seen your face or held your paw. For your soul was a pleasure to meet and love for whatever time we had to share.” - Anonymous
Since the rescue’s inception, our goal has been to provide an appropriate, nurturing, and loving environment for senior and special needs Boxers, and other dogs who no longer have homes, and who are typically considered unadoptable. Over the past 11 years we have provided just such an environment and here are a few stories about our special residents.

Maxwell
Maxwell’s journey from being a lost pup in the forest to finding a forever home is truly heartwarming. It’s amazing how he managed to survive on his own in such a rural area, a testament to his resilience and spirit.
Found at just 6 months old, alone in the vast expanse of Big Bear, Maxwell’s survival until someone found him is remarkable. Upon arriving at the local shelter, he was treated with extra care, almost like a little mascot, by the shelter staff. Despite their efforts, Maxwell’s time at the shelter was limited, and he wasn’t able to find a home.
Fortunately, a Deaf Dog Rescue organization stepped in to give Maxwell another chance. However, spending nearly five years confined to an 8×8 space took its toll on him, leading to aggression towards anyone new and making adoption seem unlikely.
Enter Chris, a dedicated DGT volunteer with a soft spot for white deaf dogs. Chris began working with Maxwell at the rescue, patiently building trust with him. Maxwell, though hesitant at first, gradually began to open up, albeit with a few nips along the way.
Their journey together wasn’t without its challenges. Maxwell started with weekend visits to the sanctuary, gradually progressing to overnight stays as trust between him and Chris grew. Despite the setbacks, Chris remained steadfast in his commitment to Maxwell.
Finally, after months of hard work and dedication, Maxwell found his forever home with Chris. Their bond is a testament to the power of patience, understanding, and unconditional love. Now, at 5 years old, Maxwell embarks on the next chapter of his life, filled with love, care, and companionship. It’s a beautiful example of how dedicated volunteers can make a real difference in the lives of animals in need.

Mimi’s physical scars bear witness to the hardships she endured before finding refuge here at the Sanctuary.

a stab wound on her side that left her with back and leg issues speaks volumes about the challenges she must have faced.
Despite these visible reminders of her past, Mimi’s personality shines through as she embraces her newfound safety
and love living at the Sanctuary. She is a senior but her best years are upon her now.

Past Residents
Blarney
Blarney’s past journey to us was a mystery. When he first arrived, his cautious demeanor spoke volumes about the hardships he had likely endured. It was evident that he had lost faith in humans, perhaps due to mistreatment or neglect in his past. His guardedness was a shield he had developed to protect himself from further pain and disappointment.
Building trust with Blarney required patience, understanding, and a gentle approach. It took time for him to realize that not all humans were to be feared, that some could offer kindness and love without expecting anything in return. Slowly but surely, he began to let his guard down, cautiously opening his heart to the possibility of forming meaningful connections, and those connections he surely did, making lasting friends here at the Sanctuary.
Through consistent care and compassion, Blarney gradually learned to trust again. Each moment of genuine affection and understanding helped to chip away at the walls he had built around himself. He blossomed into the loving and playful soul that we came to know and cherish.
Despite the scars of his past, he found solace and acceptance in our care, ultimately finding peace in the embrace of trust and affection.
Buster
Buster’s presence at the sanctuary marked the beginning of our journey filled with compassion and purpose. As the first dog to arrive, he witnessed the transformation of the space from its early days, from the humble beginnings to the bustling sanctuary it would become.
His role went beyond mere companionship; he became a guardian, a silent overseer of the sanctuary’s growth and evolution.
Despite the challenges he faced in his past, Buster’s innate cautiousness around strangers spoke to the resilience he carried within him.
His journey from rescue to rescue highlighted the unfortunate reality many animals face, but in our care, he found stability and a sense of belonging.
To me, Buster was more than just a companion; he was a steadfast presence, a source of comfort and protection. His majestic soul shone through in the way he interacted with both humans and animals, greeting them with a peaceful touch that reflected his gentle nature.
Throughout the months of construction and expansion, Buster stood watch over the sanctuary, embodying the spirit of an ambassador with his unwavering dedication and subtle yet protective instincts. His silent vigilance spoke volumes about his loyalty and commitment to us and the sanctuary’s mission.
As we reflect on the beginnings of the sanctuary, we can’t help but feel privileged to have had Buster by our side, his unwavering presence a constant reminder of the profound bond between humans and animals. Together, we laid the foundation for a sanctuary filled with love, compassion, and the promise of a brighter future for all who walk through its gates.
Chiquita
Chiquita’s story is one of many, sadly to say. She was a junk yard dog. It was her job to protect the yard. Chiquita’s story is unfortunately all too common, but here at the Sanctuary, we were able to provide her with the care and love she deserved. It’s tragic that her only socialization was with metal junk, but despite her rough start, Chiquita showed incredible resilience.
Being the only female amongst all the boys, Chiquita definitely made her presence known. Her little body was mighty, despite the issues she faced with her hips and knees from a lack of care when she was young. But she didn’t let that slow her down. Chiquita loved living here, especially basking in the sun for hours on end.
Despite her physical aches, she ran around with the best of them, enjoying every moment of freedom and companionship. Her story reminds us of the importance of providing care and compassion to animals who have been neglected or mistreated. Chiquita’s spirit and resilience inspired us every day.
Gulliver
Gulliver’s story is a testament to the resilience and spirit of senior dogs, even in the face of hardships they may have endured throughout their lives.
Despite the challenges he faced, he maintained a lively and spirited demeanor, showing a zest for life that belied his age. In our care, Gulliver experienced the love and comfort he deserved in his twilight years. We provided him with the simple joys of soft beds, delicious meals, and the freedom to bask in the warmth of the sun. These gestures of kindness undoubtedly brought him a sense of peace and contentment in his final time we got to share with him.
Gulliver’s discerning nature in choosing his people speaks volumes about the depth of his affection and the bonds he formed with those around him. To be counted among his “loved” group was a privilege, a testament to the special connection he shared with those who cared for him. Even as he crossed the rainbow bridge, Gulliver’s spirit remained vibrant and full of life. We feel his playful spirit forever prancing among the clouds.
Lucky
Lucky was one in a million. He only had 2 speeds – fast and really fast!! Lucky had so much energy and combined with his strength he lost his home – being taken to the shelter and labeled aggressive to people, dogs and kids. Lucky’s story is both heartbreaking and inspiring.
It’s unfortunate that misunderstandings and lack of socialization led to him being labeled as aggressive, especially when it seems that his true nature was far from that.
It’s also a reminder of the importance of providing dogs with proper exercise, socialization, and training. He embraced life with such gusto and joy, playing with humans and dogs alike.
Despite the label he was given, Lucky showed his true colors as a loving and exuberant dog. He was so full of life and had a great attitude no matter what he did. Lucky was an extraordinary dog.
Finding his way here was truly a stroke of luck for Lucky. We provided him with the space, freedom, and understanding he needed to be himself. His attitude and zest for life were truly inspiring.
Matt
Matt’s journey from a tumultuous start to finding a loving forever home is both poignant and inspiring. Despite being adopted as a young dog, his deafness led to misunderstandings and ultimately his return to the shelter. It’s disheartening to hear that not many families were willing to accommodate his needs, but unfortunately, it’s a reality for many deaf or challenging dogs.
Spending much of his youth in a shelter environment, Matt faced numerous challenges. His deafness compounded with behavioral issues stemming from his experiences, leading to a label of aggression that further diminished his chances of finding a home.
Fortunately, Chris, a dedicated volunteer with a deep understanding of the needs of deaf dogs, stepped in to offer Matt the support and guidance he desperately needed. With Chris’s patience and understanding, their bond flourished, and Matt found solace and comfort at the sanctuary.
The sanctuary provided Matt with the space and environment he needed to thrive. Freed from the confines of the kennel, he was able to relax, chase gophers, make friends, and enjoy life in a way he hadn’t before. Chris’s ongoing commitment to Matt’s well-being ensured that he had the time and support necessary to overcome his challenges and become the best version of himself.
Eventually, the time came for Matt to transition to his forever home with Chris. Their bond, forged through patience, understanding, and unwavering love, grew even stronger as they embarked on this new chapter together. Matt’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact that love and dedication can have on the lives of shelter dogs, especially those with special needs.
Massimo
Massimo’s reign at the Sanctuary was indeed a joyous one, though we jestingly referred to him as the “King,” he truly embodied the role of the court jester.
His ability to find amusement in the simplest of things, whether it be toys or pinecones, was a testament to his playful spirit. He was a lover of life, finding joy in every moment, whether it was splashing in the pool or tearing across the fields in sheer exuberance.
However, Massimo’s previous training methods had left him wary and hesitant, especially when confronted with forceful commands. His gentle nature meant that he thrived on love and support rather than heavy-handed training.
Despite his past experiences, Massimo remained an easygoing and beautiful soul, with a presence that commanded attention. He taught us the importance of understanding and respecting each individual’s spirit, and that sometimes, all it takes is love and support to bring out the best in someone. Massimo will always hold a special place in our hearts, a reminder of the power of kindness and compassion.
Mister
Mister’s journey has been one of the most poignant and touching stories we’ve encountered here at the sanctuary. Seeing him come from a challenging background where trust was shattered and aggression became a defense mechanism broke our hearts.
He was living with a family that used him as a breeding pair. The owner kept one of his puppies, and as the male puppy grew up he began to challenge Mister. There were fights and the owner could no longer handle him. He was then surrendered and they kept the male puppy.
He came to us with trust and aggression issues. But witnessing his transformation under our care and with the guidance of Joe, our beloved trainer, filled us with hope and joy.
Mister found solace and security within our sanctuary. He learned to trust again, and his once-aggressive demeanor softened as he realized he was safe among us.
It was all the gift we needed. Watching him run freely among the trees, chasing after his favorite ball with pure light hearten joy, brought smiles to our faces and warmth to our hearts. In our sanctuary, every dog’s story matters, and Mister’s journey serves as a testament to the resilience and capacity for healing that dogs possess.
We’re grateful to have been a part of his journey, providing him with the love, patience, and understanding he needed to thrive once more. And while his story began with pain and uncertainty, it then shined brightly with hope and redemption.
Pete
Pete’s arrival at the sanctuary marked a turning point in his life, coming from a tragic and lonely situation after the loss of his dad.
His dad had passed away in the home from suicide and it was several days before help would arrive. Those initial days were undoubtedly difficult for him, grappling with the sudden absence of his loved one and yearning for assistance in navigating his newfound reality.
The experience left a mark on Pete, altering his demeanor towards strangers and making it challenging for him to find a sense of security and belonging. However, with patience and dedication, Pete’s true personality began to emerge.
Once trust was established and time was invested in building a connection, Pete revealed himself to be a charming and affectionate companion.
He found joy in the simple pleasures of play, conversation, and companionship, exuding happiness in every interaction. At the sanctuary, Pete found the safe haven he desperately needed to heal and flourish. Surrounded by caring individuals who understood his needs and provided unconditional support, he was able to shine brightly and embrace life with newfound vigor. Pete’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of love, patience, and the sanctuary’s nurturing environment.
Puppy
Puppy came to us in a round about way from a Military Dad. His Dad was deployed and was left with a family member. Sadly this home could not handle Puppy’s energy and left him to be outside until he started to become too much for her. Puppy had quite the journey before finding his way to the sanctuary.
It’s unfortunate that his energy and quirks made him a challenge for his temporary home, and for also finding him a home that would give him the patience and guidance
he needed. He found a place here where he could truly thrive. In the right environment for Puppy he blossomed, making friends and finding his balance.
And it’s heartening to say that despite his challenges, he remained a happy and playful boy well into his senior years. Every dog deserves a chance to find their place, and we were happy to be that for him.
Rags
Rags’ journey is truly inspiring, a testament to the resilience and strength that animals possess even in the face of unimaginable hardship. His past, marked by human abuse, left him physically scarred by the vivid mark running the length of his back bore witness to the pain he endured, likely inflicted by a searing hot object or scalding water. Yet, despite the trauma he suffered, Rags refused to be defined by his past.
Upon finding refuge in the sanctuary, Rags showed an incredible spirit. Despite initial attitude to other dogs, his innate charm and exuberance gradually emerged. His willingness to adapt and form bonds with other dogs showcased his resilience and determination to overcome his past traumas.
Despite the scars he carried, Rags blossomed into a source of joy and laughter for those around him. In the open and nurturing environment of the sanctuary, Rags found solace and companionship among his fellow canines. Despite his initial aversion to other dogs, he embraced their company during walks and playtime, finding comfort and support in their presence.
It’s a testament to his remarkable personality and spirit that he was able to find happiness and love despite his difficult beginnings. Rags’ story serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of love, compassion, and resilience, inspiring all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Reece and Nova
Reese and Nova’s story is both poignant and inspiring. Found in a dire situation after their owner’s passing, they endured days of neglect before help arrived. Their circumstances were dire, lacking even the basics of food, water, and attention. Confined to a yard for most of their young lives, they had little exposure to the outside world and needed time to adjust to a new way of life filled with peace and care.
Despite their challenging past, Reese and Nova’s bond remained unbreakable. Their resilience shone through as they awaited their chance for a better life. And finally, that day arrived when a compassionate family sought to adopt a bonded pair. Reese and Nova, inseparable as ever, found themselves welcomed into a beautiful home where they now experience the joys of being cherished members of a loving family. Their journey from hardship to happiness is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of love and compassion.
Sophie
Sophie’s journey to the sanctuary paints a picture of a longing for love and connection that remained unfulfilled until her arrival. Despite numerous attempts to find her forever home, she never experienced the warmth of a soft couch or the sense of belonging within a family. Overcoming past health concerns became a shared goal for those at the sanctuary, driven by the special love that Sophie had to offer.
Sophie’s capacity for love was immense, radiating in every interaction. Those fortunate enough to be in her presence could feel the enormity of her affection. The imprint she left on the hearts of those who crossed her path was undeniable, creating lasting memories of the genuine and profound connection she shared with anyone she met. At the sanctuary, Sophie finally found the love and care she deserved, and her boundless affection became a source of inspiration for all who encountered her.
Teak
Teak came to us a very insecure dog. He was a nervous dog and would transfer that insecurity to his person while overly stimulated. This made Teak a harder placement but once here at the Sanctuary he loved all the calm free space.
It’s heartwarming to tell about Teak’s transformation! Life here at the sanctuary provided the perfect environment for him to relax and flourish. It’s incredible what a calm and nurturing space can do for an anxious pup. And it’s clear that Teak thrived in this environment, embracing his newfound freedom and joy. It’s amazing how dogs will thrive when given the right care and environment. He was a real bundle of joy, bringing happiness to both his fellow furry friends and the humans around him. He loved to run and did it every day!
Voltaire
At the Sanctuary, we understand that each animal comes with their own story and unique set of needs.
When Voltaire was at the shelter, he was battling kennel cough and struggling with behavioral issues that stemmed from his time in the shelter. But as he started to feel better, we noticed a transformation in him. His so-called “aggressive” behaviors were simply manifestations of his pent-up energy and frustration.
Here, we don’t rely on leashes to control our animals. Instead, we provide open yards and a calming environment where they can roam freely and just be themselves. For Voltaire, this was all he needed to thrive. He quickly became one of the most loyal companions, making everyone around him feel safe and loved.
While some homes may have been hesitant to take in a dog with Voltaire’s history, we embrace every animal for who they are. At the Sanctuary, we believe in letting our residents be true to themselves, quirks and all. It’s what makes our sanctuary a special place where every animal can find acceptance and love.
